The other day I was staying at the Holiday Inn Express and was amazed at the comfort and quality of sleep in their bed. I tried to talk them into revealing the details about their great mattress and all I could surmise from what someone told me was that it was a custom bed made by Serta (Cloud 9 maybe?) made to their specs.

Ever since, I have been looking to buy a mattress like the one they had.

Any helpful info please? Thank you.

Serta makes exclusive models for its hotel clientele. Hotels sell these mattresses, often under their own brand. Some of these "Hotel Mattresses" are available for purchase on Serta web site. Basically, these beds use the same material as you would find in any typical Serta mattress of similar specs available in the market. Just that you end up paying more when you buy from the hotel. You may have found mattress very comfortable during your stay at the hotel, but when you buy the same mattress, it may not give you the same feel, at least not over the long term.

The hotel is, as usual, not very inclined to give you the inside info about their mattress. I think the best course for you under these circumstances would be to first stay at the hotel for a few days and while you still clearly remember the feel of their bed, go around the different stores and try the feel of the beds on display. Until you find something that comes as close as possible to the one at the hotel. That way, you are buying from a store and still getting the same experience. This will cost you less and you will have good return/refund options and warranty cover depending on the store and the manufacturer.

It is believed that hotels don't give away the details about their mattresses, which is on purpose. Their idea is that people who come to stay there, happen to have a "regular" long-used mattress back home, which has lost its comfort and support, so they will find the hotel mattress as being much better. That's a business opportunity for the hotel, which it will cash in on by jacking up the price to make a neat profit. The typical customer naively believes that there's something special in the design or material of workmanship of their mattress and will happily shell out a premium for what is really the same as a regular mattress or even inferior.

Neither these beds last as long as those you buy from a store, nor are they covered under any warranty.

I heard the Holiday Inn uses Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, though. Serta brand mattresses on the other hand, are used by the Hampton-Hilton hotels.

My point was more about the "Hotel Mattress" in general, not just about Serta beds.

Simmons BeautyRest and BeautySleep mattresses are widely available in a broad range of models with varying firmness, comfort and price levels. Most models are affordable. The comfort layer can include regular foam, gel-infused regular foam, memory foam, gel- or diamond particle-infused memory foam. Pocket coils are often used for support. They are not known to last very long.

Beautysleep is Simmons' value priced, entry-level mattress brand. Beautyrest Silver/Recharge are low- to mid-priced with more sophisticated materials/design. Platinum/World Class are mid-priced, with thicker and/or more sophisticated comfort layers and higher coil count. Hybrids (Silver, Platinum, Recharge) are mid- to luxury-priced, often with at least 2" memory foam. Black is the most luxury-level mattress with the most sophisticated materials/design.

Here are some of the BeautyRest specs:
Pocket coils for contouring and motion transfer reduction
Reinforced edge support to prevent roll-off
    Energy foam for greater stability
Transflexion technology for a longer life of comfort
No-flip design (no need to rotate/flip the mattress)
Beautyrest Silver mattresses have actual silver strands to wick away moisture, regulate temperature, and repel microorganisms. Beautyrest Black models are the top-of-the-line in the series. BlackIce memory foam contains actual diamonds as a superconductor to draw away excess body heat.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. We had one of our best nights ever sleeping in a King mattress. They told us later that it was a custom model Simmons BeautyRest. We too are very eager to buy a Simmons BeautyRest like the one at the Holiday Inn Express for our master bed.

After reading this post, we are not very sure, though. It's not clear to us why we can't buy one like they have at the Holiday Inn Express.

Hotels rooms are occupied on a rotation basis, so the beds are more or less evenly used. The mattresses get slept on at most on 3 or 4 nights in a week on average. They replace their mattresses every few years buying new ones, so each mattress is not expected to last any more than that.

OTOH, you will be using your mattress on a regular nightly basis and still expect it to give good service and stay comfortable for at least 5 to 8 years, if not more. Most importantly, when you buy a mattress (rather than use it casually as at a hotel) what mattres is how well it suits you personally. Hotel mattresses are customized for the hotel, not individual customers.

    Hope that helps.

Anyone who has just made up their mind to buy a hotel bed, and nothing else will do for them, go right here, with the name of the hotel and whatever you know about their mattress. Good Luck.
